The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness<https://library.ohio.gov/services-for-libraries/training-and-professional-development/> core training purchased by the State Library in 2019 was recently renewed for another year (access through August 2021). The subscription includes access to live and recorded webinars. Subsequent archived webinars are available as separate modules in Niche Academy. The online training, authored by Ryan Dowd, is available for all Ohio public and academic library staff. The four-part training is an empathy-driven approach that provides best practices for library staff on how to understand the homeless population and serve them better. There are also practical tips on how to deal with and de-escalate common situations and issues, and make staff feel empowered and safe.

To access the training, go to the State Library of Ohio’s Training and Professional Development page<https://library.ohio.gov/services-for-libraries/training-and-professional-development/> and click the homelessness training link. Once in Niche Academy, you will be prompted to create an account. Certificates will be issued within Niche Academy after the completion of the core training or webinar.

Upcoming Webinar

Resolving Liberal vs. Conservative Conflict in the Workplace: Lessons from the Rwandan Genocide

Special Guest Speaker: Carl Wilkens
Carl Wilkens was a humanitarian aid worker living with his family in Kigali, Rwanda in 1994 when the genocide began. As people were fleeing the country, Carl made the incredibly selfless decision to remain in-country, serving those in need by providing food and medicine to groups of orphaned children trapped in Kigali. Carl will share his experience and his first-hand knowledge on the unique way Rwanda worked toward reconciliation between genocide victims and perpetrators.

Some of the issues covered:
· Do some of your staff struggle to work together because of the political divides of 2020? If Rwanda can find ways to heal division after genocide, we can learn from them!
· Why you can’t wait for national politicians or celebrities to heal divisions in your staff.
· Practical strategies for bringing your staff together into a team.

When: January 14 at 2pm EST

Length: 1 Hour
