A Note from the Executive Director
[https://neo-rls.org/photos/77525_07122021101647.jpg]I live in a high-rise condo building with over 300 units.  As you can imagine, there are many different needs, concerns and interests among the people living there in terms of what things should be done and how they should be done.  This past Monday I attended one of the open Board meetings for the Condo Association and was reminded of the important role that a Board plays within an effective organization.  As Board members answered questions from homeowners, discussed their thinking on a variety of issues and communicated current decisions, I was reflecting on how fortunate we were to have engaged Board members with diverse backgrounds working on creating a positive quality of life in our building.  Those thoughts led me to thinking about the NEO-RLS Board and the expertise and engagement trustees regularly provide as we contemplate dues, fees, programming, membership benefits, etc. - all with the goal of helping libraries and library employees thrive.  Due to the range of issues in front of a Board it is important to ensure that many different voices are present and heard.  That is one of the reasons the NEO-RLS Board is comprised of representatives from different types and different sizes of libraries, and also from different areas of our region.  Just as importantly, the Board must have enough diversity of experience and expertise to offer a variety of perspectives when considering ideas and looking for solutions.  On April 1st we will be opening up nominations for three NEO-RLS Board seats – one for the largest of our libraries (budget over $17.5M), one for our academic libraries, and one for the smallest of our libraries (budget up to $799,999).  If you are interested in running for an open Board seat, please nominate yourself.  If you know of someone you think would make a great Board member, let them know and nominate them.  If you are interested but not sure you have enough experience, consider volunteering for a Board Committee when we make the call for volunteers in July.  You do not have to be the Director of a library to run for the Board.  You do, however, have to be the Member Representative.  Your library director can name you as a Member Representative by letting us know of the change.  Please consider serving the libraries of our region by running for an open Board seat. The State Library of Ohio and OhioNet are excited to announce the 4th installment in the Critical Conversations Series<https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=57899261&nr=6081599177>.  What to know about Intellectual Freedom, Book Challenges and Libraries with ALA’s Office of Intellectual Freedom  is a virtual event on April 6, 2022, at 3 p.m . The presentation is geared toward Ohio library staff of all types. Library staff strive to provide their communities with diverse resources, programming, and services to ensure that the library is a welcoming and inclusive institution for everyone.
We wanted to share with you some updated resources and training opportunities for the recently expanded Ohio Governor’s Expedited Pardon Project <https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=4567&nr=6081599177> .  The project is aimed at enhancing and expediting the pardon application process in Ohio for people meeting certain criteria who can show that they have been rehabilitated and have contributed positively to their communities after completing their sentences.
The Ohio Center for the Book, in collaboration with the State Library of Ohio, is hosting a virtual Wikipedia Edit-a-thon from March 26 through April 2  to add information about Ohio women to the online encyclopedia. Talk Story
Talk Story is a joint project sponsored by the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) and the American Indian Library Association (AILA). We are accepting applications from libraries and community organizations for programs that intentionally promote family literacy and oral traditions among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, American Indigenous, and/or Alaskan Native communities. Four total recipients will each receive a $500 grant to support their family literacy programs.
