A Note From the Executive Director
[https://neo-rls.org/photos/77531_07122021102150.jpg]Last week we were working with a Focus Group for strategic planning and much of the conversation revolved around themes we hear frequently discussed. One of those themes is that of libraries partnering with community organizations to further various initiatives. From the library side of the conversation we hear something like this - We want to do X, who can we partner with? From the community stakeholder side we hear something like this - Why doesn't the library partner with X? Oftentimes, we are focused on what we need as opposed to what we have to offer as a partner. This was brought home when a member of the Focus Group talked about how their community organization was approached by the Library Director to have a conversation about what the organization did, what challenges they were facing and what they needed. As a result, the Library Director was also able to share the same type of information with the organization, educating them as to the library's services, programs and aspirations. Upon hearing this, another Focus Group participant mentioned that libraries tend to wait to be asked to partner. The takeaway for the evening was that community organizations want community stakeholders involved and that means libraries must stop waiting to be invited and instead, must invite themselves to the table. The library might not be welcomed everywhere but we won't know if we don't ask! Together we are maximizing library potential. Have a great week!
