This year marks the 85th anniversary of the creation of Superman in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Rust Belt Humanities Lab at Ursuline College and the Ohio Center for the Book at Cleveland Public Library are hosting a celebration: Superman’s Cleveland: Lineage and Legacy. From September 6 through November 2, more than 20 events are planned across the greater Cleveland area for all ages, including comics fans, families, scholars, history buffs, and lovers of popular culture. A schedule of events and full details are available at https://www.supermanscleveland.com.

Special guests taking part in the celebration include local and nationally known comics creators and authors Chad Bilyeu, Sina Grace, Tony Isabella, Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Sarah Kuhn, Terri Libenson, and Mark Waid. Laura Siegel Larson, daughter of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and 13-time Emmy Award Winning journalist, will also be participating in several events.

As part of the celebration, on October 14, It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s a Cultural Icon! The Superman’s Cleveland Conference will be held at Cleveland Public Library’s downtown Main Campus with programs for all ages including a comics-making workshop for kids, scholarly presentations, and hands-on printing activities from Zygote Press. The all-day event will be capped off with a public conversation between author Brad Ricca and well-known comics writer and editor Mark Waid.

Check out https://www.supermanscleveland.com to see all our partners and sponsors, including the Ohio Humanities Council, the Siegel and Shuster Society, and many others!

All are invited to attend any or all of the events planned! However, if you can't make it to Northeast Ohio, we're encouraging libraries around the state to join us by holding a public event to celebrate the lineage and legacy of Superman, superheroes, or comics in Ohio, from September through November. While we can't provide local funding, we'd be glad to add your event to our affiliated events page on the website. Email ohiocenterforthebook at cpl.org with the subject line "Local Superman event" with details! Superman is Ohio's superhero!

This program is made possible, in part, by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Ohio Humanities or the National Endowment for the Humanities.
