A Note From the
Continuing Education Coordinator

Dynamic Dialogue: Understanding Socio-economic Diversity and Uplifting Underserved Communities<https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=276007931&mm=94196685561> is just around the corner on Thursday, May 9th at the Hilton Garden Inn in Twinsburg. This event is aimed at helping libraries better serve diverse socio-economic and marginalized groups. Attendees will explore practical strategies to promote inclusivity and social equity within their library services.

The day-long format of the conference will include a poverty simulation in the morning and breakout sessions in the afternoon. The breakouts include:

  * Serving the Incarcerated and Beyond: A Panel Discussion
  *    IIA (International Institute of Akron) 101 and Inclusion in the Library
  * Community ESL Classes at Public Libraries: The Why and How
  * Social Work in Libraries: A Panel Discussion
  * Freedges, Little Libraries, and Other Innovative Approaches to Outreach

Breakout sessions will be scheduled so that every attendee may attend two different sessions, and some are repeated.

Even if your library already conducted a poverty simulation, there are plenty of learning opportunities at Dynamic Dialogue. We are in need of volunteers to help staff the stations for the poverty simulation. Volunteers can assist in the morning and stay for the breakouts in the afternoon. Please contact Melissa Lattanzi<mailto:lattanzm at neo-rls.org> if you are interested in being a volunteer.

The deadline to register for the event is May 1st. Register today by clicking the event link<https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=276007931&mm=94196685561>.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Melissa

A Year in East Palestine:
A Photography Exhibit by Rebecca Kiger

From March 25, 2024 to April 30, 2024, East Palestine Memorial Public Library 309 N. Market Street, East Palestine, Ohio, will host a photography exhibit showcasing the TIME special report on the East Palestine train derailment. A unique community event marking the beginning of the exhibit was held on Tuesday, March 26 at 6:00 PM. This event offered an opportunity for community members to provide feedback on a diverse collection of unpublished photos captured by photojournalist Rebecca Kiger over the past year. Additionally, attendees had the chance to engage in a panel discussion featuring the representatives from TIME Magazine and community members who were featured in the report. Following a panel discussion, a reception took place.

The photo exhibit includes vignettes of various themed photographs including railroad safety, health, gardening, Beyond Plastics, the EPA, and the East Palestine Fire Department. A special box of photographs is available as well as a special rotary phone for visitors to record feedback about the photographs and to record their unique story. Interactive activities related to the exhibit are also available for children in the children's area of the library.

Panel moderator:
Misti Allison, Library Board Trustee
Rebecca Kiger, Documentary Photographer
Kara Milstein, Time Magazine Photo Editor
Robin Seman and her daughter Maria
Chief Keith Drabick, East Palestine Fire Department
Barb Kliner, Founder of Stick To It Fitness and Podcaster
Lenny Glavan, East Palestine Council member

Register for the 2024 Conservation/Preservation Grant Workshop

The State Library of Ohio, in partnership with the Ohio Preservation Council (OPC), is pleased to announce the availability of LSTA funds<https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=276039703&mm=94196685561> of up to $4,999 for libraries to conserve a single item or preserve a small, discrete group of items within their collections. The item(s) selected for conservation/preservation should be unique, valuable (culturally or monetarily), and as a cultural artifact speak to the mission and values of the applying institution. Additionally, as a cultural artifact or collection it should reflect some element of the historic and artistic record of Ohio. This is in accordance with goals outlined in The State Library of Ohio’s Five Year LSTA Plan. All analog formats, including book and paper, object, and artwork are appropriate.

Under this special program, prospective applicants must attend the workshop on May8, 2024 prior to submitting a grant application. This workshop will prepare applying institutions for submitting a successful application. By attending the workshop, prospective applicants will gain knowledge of the criteria for selecting materials for conservation/preservation, basic evaluation considerations, finding a conservator, working with conservators, contracts and insurance, and treatment documentation. Register<https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=276040925&mm=94196685561> for the workshop.

Timeline and Grant Requirements

One grant application per institution will be considered for funding.

Applications will be accepted between May 9th and August 15, 2024.

Grant applications will be reviewed by a team of State Library staff and Ohio Preservation Council members.

Successful grant applicants will be notified in early October 2024.

Grant projects will start November 1, 2024 and must be completed by August 31, 2025.
