Topics Covered: Human Trafficking: A Conversation with Karen Romero

Karen Romero is the Director of Training for Freedom Network USA, the nation’s largest alliance of organizations and individual advocates working with survivors of all forms of human trafficking.  Karen is a native Spanish speaker who worked with survivors of sexual assault as a bilingual therapist at Utah’s Rape Recovery Center, where she was trained in EMDR. She went on to direct the YWCA Utah domestic violence shelter and oversaw a team of case managers as well as provided therapy to survivors of domestic violence. Later, she served as the Social Services Director for Ayuda, an NGO based in DC, serving survivors of trafficking, domestic violence, and unaccompanied minors. Most recently, Karen worked at Polaris as the Training and Survivor Services Manager. Karen received her master’s degree in psychology from the University of Utah.

New Core Training
The new Homeless De-Escalation Core Training has been set up on Niche Academy.
The following trainings are included in the Core Training:

  *   Homeless De-Escalation 101: Trauma & the five most important seconds of conflict
  *   Homeless De-Escalation 201: Nonverbal tools to eliminate conflict
  *   Homeless De-Escalation 301: Preventing conflict
  *   Homeless De-Escalation 401: Managing your own emotions during conflict
  *   Homeless De-Escalation 501: Verbal tools for conflict

VIDEO CLIPS FOR STAFF MEETINGS
Short videos meant for staff meetings and sharing small bites of information are now available on Niche Academy. They are less than 7 minutes long and cover a wide range of topics.

A former director of a Chicago homeless shelter, Ryan Dowd is the author of The Librarians Guide to Homelessness: An Empathy-Driven Approach to Solving Problems, Preventing Conflict, and Serving Everyone.  He travels all over the United States speaking to libraries about how to best help homeless patrons using empathy and respect.  He also provides training to police departments, nonprofits and other organizations on how to compassionately manage problematic behavior from troubled individuals.

Certificates will be issued within Niche Academy after the completion of the core training or webinar.

The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness<https://library.ohio.gov/libraries/training-and-development/librarians-guide-to-homelessness> core training purchased by the State Library in 2019 and has been renewed through August 2023. The online training, authored by Ryan Dowd, is available for all Ohio public and academic library staff.  The four-part training is an empathy-driven approach that provides best practices for library staff on how to understand the homeless population and serve them better. There are also practical tips on how to deal with and de-escalate common situations and issues, and make staff feel empowered and safe.  Archived webinars are available as separate modules in Niche Academy.
