Carly Danesh-Jones, MBE, is an autistic woman and advocate, shaping policy and practice related to autistic women and girls since 2008.
Over the last 15 years, her books, films and advocacy campaigned for greater acceptance, equality of diagnosis, education and safeguarding of autistic women globally.

She was the first British autistic women to address the UN on rights in 2014. Her influential book on safeguarding autistic girls was distributed to all the UK police forces in 2021.

Carly was awarded an MBE for her services to the autistic community in 2017 and recognized with a honorary doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University in 2022. Carly shares her experience of how homelessness and autism intersect after previously being homeless as a teenage mother.

New Core Training
The new Homeless De-Escalation Core Training has been set up on Niche Academy.
The following trainings are included in the Core Training:

  *   Homeless De-Escalation 101: Trauma & the five most important seconds of conflict
  *   Homeless De-Escalation 201: Nonverbal tools to eliminate conflict
  *   Homeless De-Escalation 301: Preventing conflict
  *   Homeless De-Escalation 401: Managing your own emotions during conflict
  *   Homeless De-Escalation 501: Verbal tools for conflict

VIDEO CLIPS FOR STAFF MEETINGS
Short videos meant for staff meetings and sharing small bites of information are now available on Niche Academy. They are less than 7 minutes long and cover a wide range of topics.

A former director of a Chicago homeless shelter, Ryan Dowd is the author of The Librarians Guide to Homelessness: An Empathy-Driven Approach to Solving Problems, Preventing Conflict, and Serving Everyone.  He travels all over the United States speaking to libraries about how to best help homeless patrons using empathy and respect.  He also provides training to police departments, nonprofits and other organizations on how to compassionately manage problematic behavior from troubled individuals.

Certificates will be issued within Niche Academy after the completion of the core training or webinar.

The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness<https://library.ohio.gov/libraries/training-and-development/librarians-guide-to-homelessness> core training purchased by the State Library in 2019 and has been renewed through August 2023. The online training, authored by Ryan Dowd, is available for all Ohio public and academic library staff.  The four-part training is an empathy-driven approach that provides best practices for library staff on how to understand the homeless population and serve them better. There are also practical tips on how to deal with and de-escalate common situations and issues, and make staff feel empowered and safe.  Archived webinars are available as separate modules in Niche Academy.
