A Note From a
Continuing Education Coordinator
I’d like to highlight the many ways you can contribute to the NEO-RLS Newsletter and website. Our Library Spotlight is the perfect place to showcase your library’s programs and initiatives, as well as offer kudos to your colleagues. Not sure what to submit? Here are some examples:
* Your library has a special upcoming event that you would like to promote
* Your library recently held a successful program that you’d like to share
* Your library recently received an award or grant
* Your library has partnered with another organization to provide a unique service to your community
* You would like to recognize a colleague for their outstanding work
To submit your spotlight, use this link<https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=338537671&mm=109212575125>. You can also find the submission link by clicking the Library Spotlight logo on the NEO-RLS website<https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=338538893&mm=109212575125>.
We also invite you to share your favorite books, films, television, and podcasts with us to be featured in our Community Picks. With the holidays quickly approaching, perhaps your pick will provide inspiration for a gift giver. One of my personal favorite titles this year was There’s Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension by Hanif Abdurraqib<https://mms.neo-rls.org/ct.php?lid=338540115&mm=109212575125>. Hanif is a poet, essayist, and cultural critic from Columbus. You don’t need to be a basketball fan to appreciate this book (though it helps), as Hanif uses basketball as a point of departure to examine grief, family, belonging, and so much more. Let us know what media you would recommend by emailing Ragan Snead at ragan.snead at neo-rls.org<mailto:ragan.snead at neo-rls.org>.
Have a great day!
Jeff

Register now for NOTSL Fall Virtual Meeting, 11/22, Byte-Sized Libraries: AI in Cataloging, Acquisitions, and Beyond
NOTSL will hold its Fall Meeting, November 22, 2024 virtually via Zoom.
Join us for the Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians (NOTSL) Fall General Meeting: Byte-Sized Libraries: AI in Cataloging, Acquisitions, and Beyond. Terry Reese, Head of Digital Initiatives and Digital Integrations at The Ohio State University Libraries, will be the Keynote speaker. This session will discuss how tools using Generative AI are impacting the development and management of bibliographic data.
Nat Gustafson-Sundell, Collections Librarian, & Evan Rusch, Reference Librarian, from Minnesota State University, Mankato will present “An overview of Generative AI experiments at Minnesota State University, Mankato (so far).” This session will cover several experiments and initiatives focused on Generative Artificial Intelligence. We provided several examples at the Generative AI in Libraries (GAIL) conference. We will present a revised and expanded overview of our experiments at the Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians (NOTSL) Fall General Meeting.
Jeannette Mazur, Electronic Services Content Analyst, will present “AI and cataloging: The good, the bad and the Ugly.” Key topics include AI Basics, creating MARC records with AI, and future AI improvements to the OPAC. The potential pitfalls are also examined, such as the costs of AI OPACs, the expertise required for implementation, and the ongoing need to manage hallucinations and biases.
Several librarians from New York University, will present “Knowledge Access AI Study Group: A Space for Learning about AI and Assessing Its Impact on Metadata.” This session includes three brief demos, showcasing the lightning talks from the AI Study Group, which was established to demystify AI and understand its impact on the metadata operations through reading, testing.
Registration is now open for “Byte-Sized Libraries: AI in Cataloging, Acquisitions, and Beyond.” All are welcome; membership is conferred on all attendees.
