It looks something like this although we play with the percentages to make it fit within the budget. We can move just the center and the other cells are fixed calculations off the center (see the numbers on the outer edges above and beside). Our salary ranges are from 85% - 115% (100% midpoint with a 15% spread each way). We have a 3 point scale for performance ratings with weighted scores by competency.

Our library has a matrix of performance score and position within the pay range to determine what a staff member’s increase will be. We align the matrix so that the average fits within our annual budget for salaries.
We used to only do across-the-board increases but were getting feedback from staff that it seemed unfair to those who were here longer or were working at a higher level. It is not a simple transition (understatement) but we made it work.

Our library is looking to make some updates to our pay scale. Some questions came up at the last board meeting, and we were wondering what other libraries are doing. Our current pay scale is not initiative based, meaning you get a pay increase at a scheduled time without any kind of evaluation of your work. I’m wondering do other libraries follow a set scale and are your increases dependent on performance as well as employment time. We are wanting to make this transition as smoothly as possible. Thank you for any help you can give me!
