Topic: Digital Collections in Transition: Migration, Metadata, and Repository Strategies
Join us for a look at the challenges and opportunities involved in migrating digital collections. Presenters will share experiences with platform migrations, repository consolidation, metadata remediation, and evaluating options for digital collections. Hear practical tips, workflows, and lessons learned from a variety of migration projects and what to consider when deciding whether, when, and how to move your collections.
Speakers:
- Do We Go or Do We Stay: Comparing Alma Digital to Digital Commons. Jonathan Atwood (the/they), Digital & Web Services librarian, Courtright Memorial Library, Otterbein University. From 2024-2026, Atwood spearheaded a comprehensive ROI analysis on the possibility of migrating Otterbein University's institutional repository from the Digital Commons platform to Alma Digital. The presentation will discuss the process and findings of that analysis, along with Otterbein's plan for their repository platform going forward.
- Migrating Large Digital Collections into a Consolidated Repository. Amanda Boczar (she/her), director, Digital Initiatives & LeEtta Schmidt, director, Integrated Research and Impact Services, University of South Florida. Boczar and Schmidt will discuss prepping for and lessons learned with digital repository migration, as well as planning for exit strategies.
- Alma Specto Starter Migration Tips. Spencer Lamm (he/him), Library Systems analyst, Technology Services Team, OhioNET. Lamm will share lessons learned from migrating libraries to Alma Specto Starter from CONTENTdm, Digital Commons, and Islandora Legacy.
- Migrating Cultural Heritage Digital Collections: A Migration Workflow and Bulk Metadata Remediation Strategies. Evan Miller (he/him), Digital Preservation and Digital Collections archivist, Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives, Indiana University Indianapolis. This presentation will describe the author’s experience of migrating cultural heritage digital collections as part of a consortium-supported move from OCLC's CONTENTdm to a specialized version of Samvera's Hyku, including a migration workflow, methods for bulk metadata remediation using spreadsheets, and challenges faced along the way.
