Office of Information Technology Customer Update - August 13, 2004


Riffe SOT -

Saturday, August 14th, from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.=20
Riffe SOT Building Management informed all Riffe SOT Tenants that
electric switching testing
Would be conducted during this time period.  They recommend all
equipment be powered off.
Network connectivity will not be available during this period.  This
outage will only affect=20
the Riffe SOT customers.  =20


Scheduled Maintenance:

Completed Maintenance:

None.


Domain Name System Procedure:

Effective July 23, 2004, all DNS requests that are received in the
Network Operations Center,=20
after 3:00pm, Monday through Friday will be processed the next business
day.  Any requests=20
received after 3:00pm on Friday, will be processed the following
business day (Monday) to=20
take effect on Tuesday.


.Gov Domain Names:

The General Services Administration (GSA), of the federal government,
notified OIT that they will=20
start charging for ".Gov" domain names.  The new fee will affect any
agency that has a specific=20
".Gov" domain name assigned to them (i.e. MyOhio.Gov).  The fee does not
affect an agency's use of=20
the "Ohio.Gov" domain name. The new fee will be $125 per year.  New
".Gov" domain name registrations=20
will be charged beginning July 6, 2004.  Existing ".Gov" domain names
will be charged in staggered=20
intervals from July 15, 2004 through September, 2004.  An OIT
representative will be contacting the=20
agencies that have assigned ".Gov" domain names within the next couple
of weeks. OIT will pay the
yearly fee and invoice the agency for this cost.


Non-TCP/IP Protocols:
Included in the Office of Information Technology's Long Range Plan is
provide a TCP/IP only ohio.gov=20
backbone.  Our goal is to remove all Non-TCP/IP protocols (DECnet, SNA,
IPX, Appletalk, etc.).  OIT=20
network engineers will be contacting agencies, boards and commissions,
in the near future, that are=20
still using Non-TCP/IP protocols, to work with them on determining an
alternate solution.
