Lost In Translation: Can Children's Librarians and IT Staff Talk?=20
November 9, 2004
Co-sponsored by the OLC Children's And IT Divisions, with generous
funding from OHIONET
Can we talk?=20
Not "may" we talk, but "can" as in "are we able to talk?
Talk to whom? Talk about what?=20
Leaders of OLC's Children's Services Division and its Information
Technology Division have pooled their expertise and resources to create
a workshop focused on the needful communication that has to take place
between the library's IT department and its children's services staff if
the library's website is going to be appealing to its youngest users.
The latter, creative people that they are, generally have fabulous
notions about what will entice and engage children: Lights! Color!
Action! All too often, however, IT folks, practical people that they
are, understand the technical difficulties inherent in mounting web
pages that may not download quickly, require additional plug-ins or
leave less-savvy users behind. Often, in terms too technical, they're
expertise is perceived as a roadblock to help the children's staff
achieve its vision.
What to do?
This workshop invites both children's and IT staff to explore ways to
more effectively communicate and to understand what to do, what not to
do, and why to do or not to do it when working to design engaging
children's sites.
