Yes they can, they can even run autoplay like cds and run programs on your computer! I was just reading a security article about turning off autoplay via group policy for all devices including usb for this reason in fact at:

Great tip!
 
Good antivirus will scan these devices if set up properly though so you should be ok if you have it installed.

Can memory sticks carry viruses the same as cd's and floppys?  Should we allow patrons to bring them in and use them in our machines?
