We use a "split-brain" DNS setup here at Holmes County District Public
Library.  This sounds a lot like what you're looking at doing.

Internal DNS is just for the LAN and we have 3rd party DNS point to our
publicly accessible IPs like mail, staff website, etc.

I'd be happy to discuss the setup if you'd like to give me a call
sometime.
