Network Outage: January 3, 2006
Between approximately 11:00am and 12:45pm today, the ohio.gov core
backbone experienced an ATM switch failure which resulted in loss of
connectivity to OIT customers. The preliminary analysis indicates that
the network outage experienced was the result of a memory failure on one
of OIT's main ATM switches (ATMSOCA) which provides IP connectivity to
the ohio.gov network. This failure left the switch inoperable.
Immediate action was taken to resolve the memory issue. ATM routing
anomalies continued until ATMSOCB (a second ATM switch) was restarted.
The network impact was due to devices that are dependent on the ATM
backbone for IP connectivity. Post mortem analysis of the ATM issue
will be conducted.
Please contact the Ohio Customer Service & Security Center at
ocssc at ohio.gov or 614-644-0701 if you have any questions.
