We do have video cameras in some of our branches in problem areas. But
if you don't have the budget to purchase real ones, I expect that a
"dummy camera" that you can buy for under $20 and a sign under it
reading "This area is under video surveilance" would certainly make them
think twice. Like here for example... you can even get them with
flashing lights.

I am interested in hearing from other small libraries the solutions they
have come up with to deter the theft of dvds. We have recently had the
theft of 8 dvds from our shelves. The dvd is removed from the case and
the empty case put back. Our dvd area is located behind the circ. desk
and is blocked from entering any other part of the library. We try to
watch the area but there are times when this area is out of our sight.
We have thought about moving them - setting up a video camera or if you
have any suggestions on what has worked for you please email me off the
list.
