At our Northside Branch Library we have a Business Services area with one
scanner-equipped machine which has a variety of image translation, document
creation, and CD/DVD burning applications. We call it a "file transfer"
station and encourage patrons to scan images, edit them, and save onto
optical disks for take-away.
Ken Roberts of our staff has put together an interesting screen saver
showing the various tasks which can performed by the workstation.
We keep this machine off of the Internet and are able to open up permissions
to a much greater extent as well as keep it from being monopolized by
surfers. We maintain a few loaner jump drives for patrons to use in
transferring from the 'net.
Other items in the Business Services area include paper punch, paper cutter,
staplers, tape, etc. as well as a copier.
We assist as much as possible and are implementing more training for staff,
but in general we assume a responsibility on the patron to be computer
literate. We do not charge for this service.

I am interested in hearing from anyone who has image scanners in place on
public PCs. Do you have a portable scanner and loan it to patrons to plug
into any PC? A specific station with a scanner attached? How much staff time
is spent assisting patrons? Do you charge? Do you have one of those Kodak
machines like I see in Krogers? Any info appreciated.
Thanks.
