Program Description:
Join Floyd C. Dickman as he discusses his criteria for selecting books and
introduces his list of favorite books published in 2008- including books not
yet available for purchase. Hear about wonderfully illustrated picture
books; humorous books to make children laugh; beginning-to- read books to
challenge new readers; fiction to entice every student, especially the
reluctant reader; intriguing non-fiction; and great read-aloud books. The
focus of the workshop will be books to read just for fun and books that
enhance the curriculum. The interest level of the books will range from
kindergarten to grade 5.
Workshop participants will have the opportunity to examine the books
including advanced copies from publishers of books not yet released. The
participants will review the books in grade-level groups, and offer their
suggestions on how they would use the books with students. Elementary school
librarians and teachers from the same school system are welcome to attend
together to begin planning for the upcoming school year. There will be
plenty for youth service librarians from public libraries as well: preview
new books to order for your shelves and homework help centers and get ideas
for helping homeschooling parents fulfill their curriculum needs.
Meals: No meal is included in this workshop
Audience: Elementary school and public librarians.
