Because the cost of the color copy machines/printer toner/paper is
handled by the company on a page count basis and we don't want staff
printing their vacation/kitty photos to it upping the count. : )
Other networked ones are in our graphics department and we only want to
allow certain users to access them.
As I said the ones we have for public are open. Most of our networked
printers are for administrative staff though.

I am curious as to why you have your printers locked down so. We only
have a couple of "local" printers. The rest are network printers (IP
addresses assigned. The Patron boxes print to the HP 4050 behind the
circ desk and staff have access to printers at the branches as well as
the Dir, Assist Dir, and Tech offices. We have had no problems at all
with this arrangement. When we had printers connected directly to the
patron computers, I was constantly working on them. Since I setup the
networked printers, I very rarely have to do anything to them.

Hello Eric,
We don't use a lot of networked printers but we have several color
copiers that can be used for our Admin staff to print to. We use a
Windows Print server and share them. We set up access security via the
security properties tab and create groups for certain printers and just
add the group. We use locked mandatory profiles and only admins can
install printers on the workstation. We install the networked printers
on workstations for our users on an as needed basis. We have the good
fortune that most of our staff at least have a local printer so it is
not a big undertaking managing them.
We also have a few wireless printers at the branches for users that are
shared as open for patrons to print from their wireless laptops.

I am curious how other techs/admins deal with managing networked
printers ? Does anyone use Active Directory to make these
"discoverable" via the Windows Add Printer wizard?
If not, how do you manage these from a staff perspective? Windows
shares? direct to printer? Automated scripts or manual installation?
