[OPLINTECH] SteadyState - no Win7

Don,

You can schedule a maintenance period over night with DeepFreeze for your
updates. Some are a challenge, but the Windows Updates are a snap. With
the DeepFreeze admin console, you can even schedule automatic shutdowns and
restarts.

At Way I have the computers follow this routine:
-restart at 10:00pm
-go into Maintenance period
-do Windows Updates
-End maintenance period
-Shut down at midnight
-Turn on at 8:30am

I love Firefox but I'm having trouble with the updates on patron machines.
I'm not sure the exposure to an extra browser is worth the hassle. Adobe
products and java are also something that needs managed, but I've just been
doing a monthly run of updates on those. I'm sure there's a better way to
handle it, but I haven't gotten around to it. Absolutely accepting advice
=)

For years, the only user control we had on our public PCs was Deep
Freeze. Then a new IT Specialist, frustrated and appalled at the lack
of updates, removed Deep Freeze and tried to just lock everything
down. (Sort of the reverse direction that we aged library IT folk
have moved in over our careers).

That IT person lasted 6 months with us. We now have no Deep Freeze
and crippled public computers. Something needs to change.

What direction do you all recommend I push New IT Specialist? Does
Deep Freeze allow some way that regular updates can automatically be
installed, or is it still the tedious process of visiting every
machine, booting unlocked, installing updates, and rebooting locked?
