[OPLINTECH] Virtualization

Hi Jim-

We virtualize as much as possible, using VMware.  This includes:


 *   Windows AD and supporting services such as DNS, DHCP, and SCCM (we keep 1 physical AD server just in case)
 *   Web servers
 *   3rd party applications as much as possible.  We still get the occasional "our app isn't supported in a virtualized environment", but by in large we have yet to encounter a problem virtualizing 3rd party apps.

About the only things we don't virtualize are email (we are Office 365 customers) and databases.  I'm a little hesitant to put production versions of these servers on VMs…just my paranoia I guess that performance could be an issue.  That being said, I know a lot of people who do these as well.
