One of my favorite tools is wiki on a stick.
(http://stickwiki.sourceforge.net/) You can keep anything  (almost) on it. I
keep CD- keys, network setup, research I've done and the solutions that work
best in one place.  I have one page titled "things I've learned the hard
way". I'm ALWAYS adding to that (maybe someday I'll make a book out of it
....lol).
