[OPLINTECH] Simple FAX Machines

GCPL is currently using Canon PIXMA MX922 multi-function fax/scanner/printers.
They are cheap, relatively compact, supplies are reasonable and like everything in this genre they are expendable.
The down side is that both scanning and faxing is staff driven. But demand turns out to not be very great.
Only configuring we do is disable wireless printing so patrons don't hit the printer with their tablets.

Have looked at, and budgeted for both Fax24 and a document station solution but so far the cost of either solution has not come close to the anticipated demand. I may be wrong, but I think a hidden cost of Fax24 is having to purchase a supply of the money cards for patrons who don't have a credit card.

We have these at three of our locations and will be adding more.  They are relatively easy to use and require no assistance by staff.  The only limitation is that payment is by credit card only.  There is no cost to the library other than to provide a telephone line.  In our locations, we were able to use an unused network cable to connect to our phone system.

Tyra, if you are interested in seeing one in action, we have them at our Austintown and Tri-Lakes branches.

At our Main Library, we have installed a SimpleScan station that we purchased through BayScan Technologies.  As well as offering the ability to scan to print, USB drive, and email, it allows our customers to fax.  We purchased a coin box from the same source, so the only payment method is in cash.  Of course, the downside is that staff must empty and count the money regularly.  However, the stations is self-serve, menu-driven and is very easy to use.  Our customers love it.

Hi Tyra,

We are currently looking at FaxScan24 which is at no cost to the library and does not require a coin-box. You can go to their website but here some additional information I received from them recently:

The scan-to-email feature is a two step process where you follow the voice prompts at the kiosk, which enable the user to scan their documents into our service.  Then, the user would login to www.myfaxscan.com<http://www.myfaxscan.com> to locate their document via entering their payment card number they entered at the kiosk as well as their 10 digit phone number.  Once the document has been identified as the users, they can forward to any email.

Please be aware, it costs you nothing to have it in your library.  And, there is no staffing required because of the easy-to-follow voice instructions provided once the handset is lifted on our fax kiosk.  Also, it is an easy service for you to implement.  When you are ready to give us a try, just send back a signed agreement (attached), and decide which low-use analog phone line you will have our kiosk share (you do not need to provide a dedicated phone line).  Then, within 2-3 weeks we will ship you your choice of our table-top or floor-stand FaxScan24 kiosk.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a FAX machine for public use?  No coin box, no credit cards, just a machine to use.
The only things we want to be able to do are:
1) block international calls, and
2) block incoming faxes.
That's it, but I've been unable to find any that say they'll do these things.
