[OPLINTECH] Fwd: Question about trends

I have been noticing more LED lighting fixtures and motion sensors to turn lights on and off lights in rooms and open areas in libraries. Also auto flushers and auto faucets in rest rooms are becoming more widely adopted.  There are newer drinking fountains that offer a separate faucet to refill tall water bottles and cups.

IP security cameras are coming down in price making them more attractive compared to inexpensive analog security cameras. IP cameras have a much better image and video quality. IP phone systems (hosted or inhouse) are also becoming more common.

These newer technologies I feel will increase in libraries as time goes on and at one time or another most of these will be used my the majority of library patrons. I know its not what most people think about when it comes to technology but I think this type of often over looked technology is also as important as the other things that have been mentioned.

This kind of piggy-backs off of “needing our own developers” and makerspace stuff mentioned previously, but open source software and hardware.  There is a wealth of technology at our fingertips, often times at very cost to us, with the main barrier to access being a sufficient technical understanding to be able to use it.  Some of these are being started and maintained by libraries these days.

I think bringing up wearables and the internet of things is interesting.   Its certainly a growing societal trend, and I too have not heard mention of it yet relating to libraries..

Haven’t seen this yet, so I’ll toss it in……

Federated searching, coupled with, better searching.

As we add services, programs, and stuff (physical and electronic), it’s getting more and more difficult for a patron to find what they are looking for.  A search that returns 20,000 results is just as bad as one that returns 0 results.  There’s more information, it is spread across multiple services and it’s, in some ways, more difficult to find exactly what you’re looking for.

So far, here are the thoughts I've gotten to my previous question (tech trends--what's important to pay attention to right now?).  Agree? Disagree? Add others?

  *   Device training for public
  *   Public "copier" services; wireless printing, scanning, faxing
  *   Maker spaces, particularly 3d printing
  *   Service mobility, making services available whenever, wherever, on whatever device
  *   Virtual servers
  *    Digital content in story times. Smart Boards, iPads, etc.Children's librarians are starting to do app reviews and recommendations
for parents.
  *   Responsive design
  *   Digital collection management. Rhetoric around the battle over library
terms and pricing for ebooks has cooled, but the war wages on. More
and more content is moving to author-controlled, and we struggle to have
the mechanism to collect and disseminate it.
  *   Integration. API's are making it easier for libraries to make access
to our disparate digital collections more seamless. This will add more
energy to the increasing use of digital purchases and the declining
circulation stats of our physical collections.
  *   Coding. We need our own developers. Admin commitment to
this still lags behind.
