Anyone else out there evaluating or keeping an eye on Brave browser
<https://www.brave.com/>?
I've been a Google Chrome user for quite a few years now on my primary
computer (a Windows laptop) and generally happy with it. It's a pig on
memory, but now that I don't really need the RAM in my computer to run much
of anything besides the browser, it's not really an issue. When I'm on
linux, I make sure Chromium is installed and use that. On my primary, I
ensure that I have my adblocker and script blocker extensions. On staff
and patron computers, I ensure Web of Trust (WoT) and an adblocker
extension are installed to help protect staff and patrons from themselves.
Enter Brave. I've been keeping half an eye on it for a while now, but
finally installed it a few weeks ago. I'm interested in it on two fronts.
Personally, I'm invested(/speculating) in BAT
<https://basicattentiontoken.org>, so I'm interested in it from that angle.
But on the library side, I'm interested in it for its built-in focus on
adblocking and browsing speed optimizations. It's built on Chromium, and it
has a nearly identical look/feel to Google Chrome. So the adjustment
between Google Chrome and Brave was nearly non-existent. Being built on
Chromium, it simply points to and uses Google Chrome's extensions. I simply
installed all the same extensions that I had in Google Chrome (minus WoT
and my adblocker) and I was up and running with 99.5% the exact same user
experience. So far...I very much like it.
I'm thinking ahead and considering the idea of installing (and maybe
eventually swapping out Google Chrome for) Brave on staff/patron computers.
I was just curious if anyone else is aware of/has been keeping an eye
on/has been evaluating/has already...installed Brave on their
patron/staff/personal computers.
(Disclaimer, FWIW: BAT is not Brave, exactly. Although I suppose you could
make that argument since they are rather intertwined at the moment. While I
hope both do well for my own personal gain, my consideration of and asking
about Brave is purely for it's built-in focus on doing things (better) that
I currently have to take specific actions to install and set up on all of
the computers I work with and for its nearly identical user experience to
the ubiquitous Google Chrome. Believe me or don't believe me, my question
still stands and my decision to give it a go on library computers will have
nothing at all to do with my personal investment/speculation in BAT.)
