It's an inopportune time to talk about expenditures, but I wanted to share
some substantial discounts available to libraries offering staff IT
certification, for future reference.
SANS Institute offers nationally acclaimed courses and certifications in
information security. However, their courses are notoriously expensive.
The Center for Internet Security is a non-profit that provides
cybersecurity resources. Membership is free for State and Local Government
entities (including libraries and public universities). One service is a
semi-annual 50% discount on SANS Institute courses and certifications.
TechCred is a State of Ohio initiative to reimburse businesses (and
libraries) up to $30,000 annually for employee training leading to
certification.
- The typical cost of a SANS course and certification is over $7800.
- The semi-annual discount through CIS reduces the cost to around $3900.
- TechCred will reimburse employers up to $2000 per credential (per
employee, per funding round).
- Combining the CIS discount and TechCred reimbursement brings the
employer out-of-pocket for a SANS certification to around $1900, or 25% of
the usual cost.
If this opportunity would interest you in different circumstances, make a
calendar note - the SANS Institute discount window returns every Dec-Jan
and Jun-Jul, and TechCred funding rounds recur regularly.
