Subject: Grants for Digitizing Historical Records

I encourage everyone on the EAD list to look at the NHPRC grant
announcement for digitizing historical records
(http://www.archives.gov/nhprc/announcement/digitizing.html). This is a new
NHPRC grant opportunity recently posted on our website and on grants.gov
with an October 2, 2006 deadline.

The announcement, as you will see, seeks applications for one to three
pilot projects to integrate what we all have learned over the years in
producing microfilm publications, digitizing, producing MARC and EAD
descriptive tools, and repurposing descriptive data. Applicants will be
expected to develop tools, methods, and techniques that are cost effective
and that can be replicated and implemented by other historical records
repositories. The purpose of these pilot projects is to develop innovative
ways to digitize entire collections and series of historical records using
already processed materials with existing descriptive data (e.g. EAD
finding aids).

Since this is all rather new, we strongly encourage you to call or email me
or our Director for Technology Initiative, Lucy Barber, with your questions
and innovative ideas on this topic. And, of course, we encourage
applications from your institutions. Lucy can be reached at
lucy.barber at nara.gov.. In addition, the NHPRC will have an exhibit booth
at the August meeting of SAA/CoSA/NAGARA and we encourage you to stop by to
discuss your ideas with us during the course of the meeting.
