University Archivist and Head, Archival Services
University Libraries, The University of Akron

The University Libraries at The University of Akron invites applications and nominations for the position of University Archivist and Head, Archival Services.  We seek a self-motivated, innovative, and user-oriented individual to direct, administer, organize, and coordinate the work of the University Archives and special collections.  The successful candidate will report to the Dean, University Libraries.  The archives and special collections staff includes 2 professional positions, 1 staff position, part-time staff and student assistants.  Notable collecting areas include the rubber industry, lighter-than-air aviation, military aviation, local and regional history, performing arts, journalism, politics, social issues, women’s history, and rare books.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  
Provides a clear vision and strong leadership to focus the collecting, preservation, instructional, and exhibition programs of the department; Supports appropriate growth of collections; Ensures timely and effective access to the collections; Oversees processing, preservation, and digitization of collections; Promotes the research value of the collections to the scholarly community and advances access through digitization of unique holdings; Actively seeks external funding for enhancement of programs in archives and special collections and works closely with the Dean in donor relations; Actively seeks collaboration opportunities with other repositories in the region; Develops, implements, and oversees strategy for retention and management of university records in all formats (as mandated by the board of trustees); Provides outreach to University offices and departments in regard to responsibilities for managing information through the use of retention schedules.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  
ALA-accredited master’s degree or equivalent, or a master’s degree in archival administration; Five years of recent experience working with archives or special collections in an academic or research library; Demonstrated evidence of leadership and the ability to foster a collaborative working environment; Experience arranging and describing archival/manuscript collections; Understanding of current best practices in the creation of records for archival and special collections materials; Evidence of highly effective oral and written communication skills; Understanding of research practices and the scholarly communication process; Ability to meet academic rank and tenure requirements.  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  
Concentration in archival administration and/or credentials as a certified archivist or certified records manager; Experience with managing electronic records; Successful experience with development, fund raising, and public relations; Successful grant-writing experience; Demonstrated knowledge of records management practices; Evidence of advocacy for the role of a university archive in preserving institutional memory and making it accessible.

SALARY, RANK & BENEFITS:  
Salary and rank are negotiable, dependant on qualifications and experience.  Salary minimum: $60,000.  Twenty-two days of vacation, tuition remission, and a generous benefits package.
