Subject: [saaleaders] State Historical Society of Iowa Situation
To: SAA Leader List <saaleaders at forums.archivists.org>

 SAA Leaders:

Kathleen Roe and the SAA office have received a number of queries from
members about recent news that the State Historical Society of Iowa is
facing drastic budget cuts that could compromise access to the state’s
historical record. Kathleen has been in touch with several colleagues from
Iowa to determine what they think SAA might do to assist. While expressing
their appreciation for the interest expressed by SAA and its constituent
groups, they suggest that – for now – we promote participation in an online
petition being circulated by University of Iowa Professor Tyler Priest:

Hi friends -- please consider signing my petition in support of restoring
funding to the State Historical Society of Iowa libraries and archives.
This situation is dire. Click on link below. Please circulate and post to
social media as widely as possible. We need to swamp the Iowa Department
of Cultural Affairs with our collective voice of support.

Our colleagues in Iowa believe that getting a large number of signatures
from outside the state will draw attention to the situation in productive
ways. They have promised to contact us as soon as there is an actionable
issue that they believe would benefit from more direct
letters/calls/responses from SAA and/or its members.

In the meantime, please help us spread the word about Professor Priest’s
online petition. We have notified members generally via Facebook and
Twitter, but your advocacy with your component group members would likely
create significantly more interest.

Best regards – Nancy
