Reggio Emilia and the Hundred Languages of Children
Program Date: November 3, 2003
Program Time: 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM

Speakers:
Barb White, Akron Summit County Public Library
Linda Norton-Smith, Atelierista, and Director of Operations, Kids Play,

Sponsored by: NOLA and CAMLS Regional Library Systems and OLC

Program Description:
Library staff serving young people and their families have long celebrated
their patrons' tremendous strength and capabilities as learners, and have a
tradition of actively seeking innovative and creative ways to serve young
people better. For forty years, the experiences of the children, educators,
families, and community of Reggio Emilia, Italy, have spoken to the great
power and potential in every child. These experiences have stressed the
ability of children to teach us to learn with joy, to tell story in many
"languages," and to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. Today, advocates
for children from all over the world study the work of Reggio Emilia through
reading, discussion, and, whenever possible, visiting and studying the
well-traveled exhibit, "The Hundred Languages of Children." For a limited
time only, this exhibit will reside in Elyria and this affords us an
invaluable opportunity to explore the relationship of the experiences of
Reggio to a library context, to gain a new understanding of a "hands-on"
approach in our work with youth, and to renew joy in our daily lives.
