CHRISTIAN THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY LIBRARY

TITLE:	Public Services Librarian

REPORTS TO:	Director of the Library

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS; exceptional
interpersonal/communication skills and theoretical/practical pedagogical
sophistication. Preferred: 3-5 years experience in academic library
environment; academic degree or substantial experience in theological
discipline(s): biblical studies, church history, theology; supervisory
experience; certification/training/experience in web page construction.
Desirable: familiarity with Ex Libris/Aleph operating system.  Continuing
education in areas of theological content and bibliography, pedagogy,
research strategies and information technologies will be expected.

JOB SUMMARY: The Public Services Librarian supervises or performs all
Library functions that support direct services to CTS faculty, students,
staff and external patrons who are granted Library privileges (specifically
patrons of the Congregational Resource Center, local clergy/lay leaders and
faculty/students from other PALNI (Private Academic Libraries of Indiana)
institutions.  Responsible for circulation, online library access,
computerized databases, and reference, including supervision of circulation
transactions, interlibrary loans, reference activities, and course reserves,
in addition to serving as the principal reference librarian for patrons.
Primary (but not exclusive) resource person helping to make bridges between
theological content, pedagogy, research strategies and information
technologies. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*	Oversee and coordinate the circulation of library holdings and
interlibrary loans; review and interpret circulation policies and records
*	Provide principal reference services to patrons
*	Instruct and assist patrons in research techniques, catalog use,
database searching, and online research
*	Organize and maintain course reserves
*	Schedule and supervise delivery of audio-visual equipment 
*	Supervise shelving and shelf-reading
*	Maintain and enhance Library Web pages
*	Supervise Evening Circulation Supervisor
*	Cooperate with Office of Financial Aid in filling work-study hours
allotted to the Library; determine placements of work/study students in
Library sub-departments; supervise work/study students assigned to
circulation functions
*	Develop, plan and implement research/resource training opportunities
for faculty, students and staff
*	Work with PALNI staff and members to monitor and develop circulation
and ILL procedures


ENVIRONMENT: In 1850, members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
in Indiana chartered North Western Christian University in Indianapolis;
thereafter the school was renamed Butler University. In 1925 Disciples
established a College of Religion at Butler to prepare students for
Christian ministry. The College of Religion separated from Butler in 1958,
becoming Christian Theological Seminary. The Seminary has a primary
relationship to the Disciples of Christ and a formal partnership with the
United Church of Christ; it also provides coursework necessary to fulfill
education requirements for students seeking ordination in the United
Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church (USA), National and Progressive
Baptist Church and the Episcopal Church in North America. More than 35
denominations are represented among the faculty and student body.  The
Seminary is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools and North
Central Association of Colleges and Universities.

The Library at CTS has approximately 220,000 items supporting basic
theological education and ancillary fields. It receives/collects nearly
1,400 serials in various languages. It also houses a collection of books,
manuscripts, photographs, tracts, periodicals and other artifacts specific
to the history of the Disciples of Christ and related religious movements
and to religious history in Indiana; this collection is one of the primary
such depositories of such materials in the United States. Its Congregational
Resource Center is an ecumenical cooperative that supports educational and
leadership ministries in local and regional parishes.
