INTRODUCING NEW SEARCH TOOLS AT LISTENOHIO
=20
Warren, Ohio-May 4, 2004-ListenOhio, the world's first shared =
collection of
digital audiobooks, launched in 2001 by a group of libraries in =
Northeastern
Ohio and NOLA Regional Library System, has now expanded the program's
website with new search tools. The new search tools provide the =
ability to
search by author, title, narrator, or keyword. Additionally, results =
can be
limited to abridged or unabridged titles if desired. This is a =
significant
upgrade from the keyword search previously offered. ListenOhio =
currently
owns more than 2000 popular digital audiobook titles in MP3 format, =
which
may be downloaded by any of the participating libraries. =20

NOLA is also in process of updating the ListenOhio site to include =
"Featured
lists @ your library", "Top 10 titles @ your library", and patron owned
device downloads. Look for these new features Summer 2004.

How ListenOhio works:
Patrons can check availability and select titles from a central web =
catalog
located at http://www.listenohio.org. Library staff then downloads the
titles and load them onto a portable MP3 player, which the patron then
"checks-out" from the library. The portable players used by ListenOhio
libraries are about the size of single cassette tape and hold 17 hours =
of
digital audiobook content - which permits libraries to load multiple =
titles
on a single device. =20

Advantages of digital audiobooks:
=B7 Content cannot be damaged; libraries can spend less on =
replacing
books or tapes, and more on adding new titles to the collection.=20
=B7 New titles or more copies of a title can be added to the
collection instantly based on patron demand.
* Titles are easy to share and can be delivered to the library
instantly. A patron at one library can return a book, and five minutes =
later
it's available for download by staff at any other participating =
library.=20
* Digital audiobooks don't require any shelf space, which allows the
library to add hundreds of new titles.=20
* No need to carry and swap tapes or disks (perfect for long drives)
