Happy New Year from all your friends at CO-ASIS&T!

You are invited to join us for the first program of 2005
on Thursday evening, February 10th, 2005.
Alane Wilson of OCLC, co-author and editor of the 2003
OCLC Environmental Scan will present:

"Reclaiming The Third Place: Libraries and their Communities
in the Age of Amazoogle."

What are the external factors that impact the information profession?
The rapid change of technology is one factor, but what are the
implications of the technological trends? What other factors currently
influence the profession and library services? As part of strategic
planning activities, OCLC prepared a report of external factors
influencing libraries, OCLC & allied organizations. Interviews were
conducted with more than 100 knowledge experts around the world,
representing a variety or organizations. The collective input from
these interviews, in addition to literature review and extensive
research, yielded a wealth of insights on the real, day-to-day issues
facing information professionals. That research was used to create
The 2003 OCLC Environmental Scan: Pattern Recognition, a
report for OCLC member libraries and anyone interested in
the future of the knowledge professions. The Scan offers a
high-level view of the information landscape from the perspective
of the "information consumer".

This presentation is intended to both inform and stimulate discussion
about possible strategic directions libraries could take in the age of
the "Amazoogle" effect.
