NoveList K-8.

NOVELIST CAN HELP WITH HARRY POTTER MANIA

Harry Potter has become everyone's favorite teenaged wizard. Adults who
previously would not admit to enjoying fairy tales or fantasy have been
devouring the Hogwarts saga as fast as J. K. Rowling can turn out new
volumes. In fact, fans are inhaling the new episodes even FASTER than
Rowling is producing them. What do you do when you have read each volume
several times, studied the companion volumes (Fantastic Beasts and Where to
Find Them; Quiddich Through the Ages), and seen all the movies? Since
Volume Six, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is due out July 16th,
the appetite will be briefly satisfied, but there is still one volume to go!

What are poor Muggles to do?

FINDING HARRY POTTER READ-ALIKES IN NOVELIST

Find Similar Books offers a way to match your favorite aspects of Harry
Potter with other titles.

1. At the Search Our Database tab, click Find a Favorite Title; type in
"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" and click Search.
2. Click the Find Similar Books button (below the book cover image).
3. Click "Clear" to remove all subject headings, then select Child wizards
in the "Required" column and Schools in the "Desired" column.
4. Select levels Young Adult and Children's.
5. Click Search.
6. NoveList retrieves over 30 titles, six of which are the Harry Potter
books. Click on each title to see more information about the books.

Tip: You can select other favorite aspects of Harry Potter, instead of Child
wizards and Schools. You can limit the search to any reading level or
levels you want.

USING A BOOLEAN SEARCH OF REVIEWS

Reviewers often pick up on Harry Potter similarities even when the subject
headings are not obvious connections. You can locate novels identified by
reviewers as Harry Potter read-alikes using a Boolean search of reviews
while excluding J. K. Rowling as the author.

1. Click the Search Our Database tab and choose Boolean search.
2. Choose "Reviews" from the first drop-down menu and type "Harry Potter" in
the adjacent Find box.
3. For the second box, choose "Not," "Author" and type in "Rowling."
4. Select Children's and Young Adult levels.
5. Click Search.

NoveList retrieves nearly 50 titles, some of which you might not have
anticipated, such as Isabel Allende's YA novel, City of the Beasts. Look at
each record and check the reviews to see if the title might fulfill your
desires.

Tip: One advantage to this kind of search is that the reviews will also
tell you which titles might be disappointing to Harry's adoring public,
despite apparently similar subject matter.

USE NOVELIST'S ARTICLE and LIST SEARCH TO FIND MORE BOOKS FOR YOUR HARRY
POTTER FANS

NoveList's fiction experts have created many annotated book lists especially
for readers who want more books like the Harry Potter series, and you can
easily access these lists using the Article and List Search. Here's how:

1. At the Search Our Database tab, click Article and List Search.
2. Type "rowling" in the Find box.
3. Change the drop-down menu from All Types to Annotated Book Lists (in
NoveList K-8, change it to Teaching with Fiction).
4. Click Search.

NoveList returns several annotated book lists for this search. Bonnie
Kunzel's "Beyond Harry Potter" gives synopses of three of these annotated
lists, so it is a good one take a look at first. Please note that because
the Article and List search is a full-text search of our editorial content,
some of the lists returned may be less relevant than others (e.g., "Our Man
at Noreascon" and "Rough Beasts: Apocalyptic Novels" both mention Rowling,
but these lists do not provide suggestions of further reading for Harry
Potter fans; the rest of the book lists returned by this search, however,
do).

For a broader range of ideas in the fantasy genre, you can do the same
search as above but type in "fantasy" instead of "rowling." You can also
search for "All Types" of NoveList's editorial content (including Awards
Lists and BookTalks) by changing the drop-down menu.

SUMMARY

No matter what the age of your patron, you know that the Muggles in your
district will be re-inspired by Harry Potter to enter the world of fantasy,
wizards, magic and sorcery. Let NoveList help find the right book for them!
