Using the Popularity Sort in the New Version

We hope you have had a chance to take a look at the new tabbed version of
NoveList and NoveList K-8. In case you haven't, here is what a few of your
colleagues have said about it so far:

"I love, love, love the new NoveList interface! It's very easy to navigate.
My favorite readers' advisory tool just got even better! Thank you!" (Tulsa
City-County Library, OK)

"Excellent improvements-- easier to find anything. I really like the series
features, the easy access to booklists, and the thorough author read-alikes.
Well done! I'll be using it a lot more." (Forest Grove City Library, OR)

"LOVE the new look and all the great features!! A young patron asked for the
cul-de-sac kids series and it was SO easy to find. Thank you!" (Lake County
Library, IN)

"I love the new NoveList! Everything is so clean and well organized and best
of all, easy to use. It just keeps getting better and better!" (Johnson
County Library, KS)

So take a look! We suggest that you quickly click on each tab just to see
what's where and we invite you to look at and print out the one-page aids on
the new version, available at the NoveList Notes link at the "Readers'
Advisory" tab. For more on these aids, see the end of this note.

"Which Titles in This List Are the Best Ones?"

When our customers (staff and patrons alike) use NoveList to search the
database, many of them are overwhelmed by very long lists of search results,
especially if the search is rather broad (for example, a Describe a Plot
search for "science fiction"). One of the new enhancements available in
this version of NoveList (and NoveList K-8) is the ability to sort any of
your search results by popularity. This is a powerful sort, so we want to
make sure that you understand what it does.

Titles in NoveList (and NoveList K-8) are now assigned a popularity rating
of 1 to 4 stars if they have met certain criteria in number of purchases by
libraries and bookstores across the nation. The popularity rating is based
on data provided by Baker & Taylor.

Try this search as an example (note this is an adult search and will not
work in NoveList K-8, but the next search example will):

1. Access NoveList and click on the "Search Our Database" tab.

2. Select the "Describe a Plot" link.

3. Enter "chick lit" in the Find box. You can also click "Adult" for
level in the Limiters box.
Then click SEARCH. (Note: make sure "chick lit" is two words.)

4. NoveList returns a list of over 80 titles. Which ones are the
best? That decision is ultimately up to each reader and her tastes, but
sorting by popularity will provide information on what many across the
nation thought were the best titles.

5. Using the "Sort by" drop-down menu in the upper middle part of the
screen, choose "Popularity."

The Chick Lit list is resorted by popularity. The first 25 or so of the
titles have four stars, indicating tremendous popularity across libraries
and bookstores.

Important Note: All four-star rated titles are not equally popular. When
you sort a list by Popularity, titles displaying the same number of stars
are ranked accordingly within that list. For example, the first title
listed with four stars sold more copies across the nation than the second
title in the list also with four stars.

Another Search Example:

1. Access NoveList or NoveList K-8 and click on the "Search Our
Database" tab.

2. Select the "Describe a Plot" link.

3. Enter "coming of age" in the Find box. Also click "children's" and
"young adult" to limit by level in the Limiters box.
Then click SEARCH.

4. This search returns a large number of hits (over 900) and the
immediate question is "Which ones are the best?"

5. Using the "Sort by" drop-down menu in the upper middle part of the
screen, choose "Popularity."

The list is resorted, bringing the most popular "coming of age" titles to
the top of the list.

NoveList's new popularity sorting feature gives you a way to guide your
readers to the most widely read books in any genre or on any topic as well
as a way to narrow an extremely long result list.

One-Page Aids to Help You Communicate the New Version of NoveList

We have put together a couple of one-page aids that might be useful to you
with your staff and (especially with regard to the "Quick Start - Using Tabs
in NoveList") for your patrons. These two documents are available in
NoveList by going to "Readers' Advisory" tab and clicking on the NoveList
Notes link.

§ "What's New in NoveList" is a one-page stand-alone piece that you
can print out or send to your staff. It highlights the enhancements of the
new version.

§ "Quick Start - Using Tabs in NoveList" is also designed to be a
stand-alone one-page document that you can print out and distribute to your
patrons and staff to help them use the new tabs.

Please note that the NoveList K-8 versions of these documents are available
from the NoveList Notes link at the "Teacher Resources" tab in NoveList K-8.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, let us know via the
feedback button in NoveList or NoveList K-8.
