To all Ohio Children's Librarians:

The State Library of Ohio recently received a grant from the Louisiana
Endowment for the Humanities to coordinate and implement the PRIME TIME
FAMILY READING TIME (r) http://www.leh.org/primetime/PThomepage.htm
program in Ohio. We were one of five states to receive the grant and
attend PRIME TIME training in Lincoln, Nebraska from January 13 - 15,
2006. Five Ohio Libraries are implementing the program in 2006.

The PRIME TIME program provides a unique six to eight week program of
reading, discussion, and storytelling at public libraries and other
venues. A discussion leader and storyteller conduct weekly book
discussion and storytelling programs for children ages six to ten and
their parents. Each week provides a unique opportunity to discuss themes
with families. There are also Spanish language titles provided for those
libraries who serve Latino audiences.

PRIME TIME is accomplishing a number of goals here in Ohio, including:

*	Reinforcing the role of the family
*	Highlighting the important role of the library in the community
*	Encouraging low income and low literacy parents to use the
library and
	to read with their child
*	Helping parents and children to learn how to select books and
become
more active users of library resources

For libraries interested in implementing a PRIME TIME program, the State
Library will provide the books. Additionally, libraries may wish to
consider applying for a competitive LSTA grant to implement PRIME TIME.

The Fiscal Year 2007 LSTA Minigrant cycle is now open. Proposals are due
at the State Library on October 25, 2006. The cap for these projects is
$24,000. For more information on the LSTA Minigrant application see:
http://www.winslo.state.oh.us/publib/lstamini.html

The LSTA larger grant cycle will be open in January, 2007 with proposals
due in May. There is no funding limitation on the larger LSTA grants.
For more information see:
http://www.winslo.state.oh.us/publib/lstafull.html

For both grant cycles samples of previously funded projects are listed.
For more information on PRIME TIME FAMILY READING TIME or the LSTA
process, contact Ruth Metcalf, State Library of Ohio, 614-644-6910 or

The State Library's mission says that we are interested in offering
services to all of Ohio's citizens. Families reading together is a vital
component of library service and this program will reinforce this role.
We hope you will consider offering such a program in your library.
