[OPLINLIST] CD-ROMs shattering in high speed drives

We have been having trouble with CD-ROMS shattering in patron's newer computers. Apparently the new super high speed drives in combination with the library's old CD-ROMS, that have been played countless times, are a bad combination. One of our patrons, a computer-networking specialist who thought shattered CD-ROMs were just an "urban legend," had a CD-ROM from the library shatter in his computer, and a piece of it hit him in the knee. Within the past month we have had 5-6 other patrons come in with CD-ROMS that have shattered in their new computers. Some of these patrons had a good deal of trouble getting all the pieces out of their computers.
Have any other libraries had this problem?
Do any libraries have signs by their various types of media saying that the patron uses it at his own risk? A problem in the past was library VHS tapes getting jammed in patron's VCRs, requiring a trip to the repair shop. We never charged for the damaged library tape, but never paid for the repair of the patron's VCR. At least with VHS tapes, we didn't have to worry about a shard hitting the patron.
