[OPLINLIST] Scratched DVD's

Hello -- I'm not on this list, but a colleague forwarded me your
message. We get many scratched discs here, but I've always figured that
patrons are damaging them through lack of care in handling (and
sometimes I suspect deliberate abuse by patrons showing a lack of
respect for public property). I've never known a DVD player to damage
discs, and to my knowledge we've never had patrons suggest that a disc
was scratched by their players.

It's been my experience that discs treated by the Skip Doctor will
play in CD players, but not in DVD players. Here at Greene County, we
used to send our damaged discs out to be resurfaced through a local CD
store. The resurfacing does a much more thorough job than the Skip
Doctor, and results in a much shinier playing surface that, if you're
lucky and the scratches weren't too deep, is virtually indistinguishable
from a new disc. I can't recommend any specific resurfacing service --
we now have an RTI Eco Junior resurfacing machine ourselves and do this
work in-house -- but you might be able to find some locally there that
does it, or you might find someone online that you could ship your discs
to. (The Eco Junior machine was expensive, but in two years it's more
than paid for itself with the number of discs it has saved.)

We have been having a problem with DVD's coming back VERY scratched up.
Other staff members have suggested that the patrons are abusing them,
but I think there is something else going on. Our music CD's do not get
scratched up like our DVD's. I tend to wonder if it has something to do
with the DVD player. Does anyone else have this problem and/or do you
know what causes it? Our method of repair doesn't seem to work well
either (Skip Doctor CD & DVD Repair Device.) TIA for any info. you can
provide.
