OHIONET is sponsoring two different workshops on religious resources in
April. Space is still available, see below for details.

Religious Resources: Christian, Jewish, Islamic

Instructors: Marti Alt, Dona Straley, Suzanne Smailes

Date: April 7, 2006 Time: 10:00 AM - 3:30 PM

Location: OHIONET, Columbus Ohio

This workshop will be presented by working librarians with subject-area
expertise: Marti Alt, General Humanities Bibliographer, Ohio State
University Libraries (Christianity); Dona Straley, the Middle East
Studies Librarian at Ohio State University (Islamic Studies); and
Suzanne Smailes, Technical Services Librarian, Wittenberg University
(Judaism), and Dona Straley, Middle East Studies Librarian, Ohio State
University Libraries (Islam). Are you confused by the rapidly increasing
number of reference books and web sites on religion? What do they cover
and which ones are best? Do your patrons ask questions about Muslims and
their view of America, what foods are kosher for Jews, or how the
various sects of Christianity differ? Learn about print and electronic
religious resources in general, with particular attention to Judaism,
Christianity and Islam. Topics include not only resources on the basics
of these religions, but also the culture and customs of their adherents,
with an emphasis on the modern world. Computer hands-on time as well as
lecture/demo.

Who Should Attend:

Date: April 27, 2006 Time: 10:00 AM - 3:30 PM Location: OHIONET,

Mysterious, alluring, exotic - are these images that arise whenever you
think of India? Did you know that India is the birthplace of three of
Asia's and the world's largest religions - Hinduism, Buddhism, and
Sikhism? With a combined population of more than 1.3 billion world-wide,
2.6 in the United States, and almost 150,000 in Ohio, these three
religions still remain mysteries. Who came first, Buddha or Shiva?
Which adherents wear a turban? What roles do yoga and vegetarianism have
in these religions? Why do some women wear the "bindi" (the red dot on
her forehead)?

Learn the basic facts and resources about these religions. We will
provide you with lists of appropriate print and non-print resources,
including Internet sites that will help you build your collection and
enhance your knowledge of these three global religions. Computer
hands-on throughout the session as well as lecture/demo.
