[OPLINLIST] OPLIN Spring Database Preview news

For the past few years, OPLIN has offered libraries the opportunity to
subscribe to electronic databases through group contracts administered by
the State Library. Typically, OPLIN announced a spring "Database Preview"
period during which public libraries could test the products being offered
under a group contract. This gave libraries an opportunity to purchase
databases above and beyond those which OPLIN could afford to provide at no
charge to all public libraries.

For the last two years, the database preview was conducted in partnership
with OHIONET, which has been offering a Reference Database Discount
Program for several years, too. This year we want to simplify things a
little. OPLIN will continue to supply core databases to all public
libraries at no charge (see the current list at
http://www.ohioweblibrary.org/contents.htm), but libraries wishing to
preview and obtain other databases either individually or under a group
contract can work with OHIONET. All of these databases -- whether free
through OPLIN or purchased through OHIONET -- will be supported by OPLIN.
So libraries will get some databases free, will be able to buy others
through OHIONET, and can call OPLIN Support if they have problems with any
of these databases. We think this arrangement will be simpler and more
efficient for everybody.

OHIONET is currently preparing the spring database trial for libraries,
which will run from April 1 – May 15. Some basic information is available
at http://www.ohionet.org/reference_home.shtml. Watch for an announcement
on the OPLINLIST with complete information within the next few weeks.
