Digital Rights Management

July 25, 2007 (Wednesday)

1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Presenter: Glen Horton, Technology Coordinator & Assistant Director,
SWON Libraries

Why do you need special software to read an ebook? Why don't many
audiobooks play on iPods or Mac computers? Why are people stealing
content instead of getting it from the library? The answers to these
questions typically involve Digital Rights Management (DRM). DRM is any
technology that controls/limits how content is used. It can increasingly
be found in ebooks, audiobooks, videos, music, and other digital content
that libraries provide. Come learn about the technologies behind DRM and
how libraries are both benefiting and at risk due to the technology.

Metadata Standards and Applications

December 6 & 7, 2007 (Thursday & Friday)

9:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Presenters: Jody Perkins, Metadata Librarian (Miami University), and
Tony Chirakos, Database Specialist (OCLC)

This two-day workshop is part of the series Cataloging for the 21st
Century, a Cataloger's Learning Workshop, which is a cooperative project
of the Library of Congress Cataloging Distribution Service, the Program
for Cooperative Cataloging, and the Association for Library Collections
and Technical Services, a division of the American Library Association.
This workshop presents 21st century bibliographic control concepts,
including metadata standards and applications. The goal of the course is
to relate what attendees already know about library catalog metadata to
digital library metadata, thereby preparing them to apply their current
knowledge to new areas. The workshop explores the following topics:
introduction to digital libraries, metadata models, overview of metadata
standards and applications, metadata interoperability and distribution,
controlled vocabulary use in metadata, application profiles, quality
considerations and monitoring metadata developments. Workshop price
