Celebrated writer, storyteller to present at festival

 

Bestselling children's writer and storyteller Rafe Martin will offer a writing workshop for teens and a storytelling session during A Spring Literary Arts Festival: Entertaining Dreams in McArthur, Ohio on April 18.

Martin is the author of over 20 books and the recipient of numerous awards for his work. He appears in countless schools, libraries, festivals, and conferences the world over. His books have been translated into many languages including Swedish, French, Xhosa, Zulu, Afrikaans, Korean, Japanese and Portuguese. He works with all grades and ages-kindergarten through college-telling stories and sharing an empowering vision of language, writing, creativity, and imagination. He leaves listeners with an awareness of their own power to create. He offers adult and family performances, as well as professional workshops.

Martin has received three American Library Association Notable Book Awards, Four Parent's Choice Gold Awards, two Anne Izard Storyteller's Choice Awards, an American Folklore Society Aesop's Accolade Award, several American Bookseller "Pick of the Lists," an IRA Teacher's Choice Award and many other awards of distinction. His work has been cited in Time Magazine, Newsweek, U.S News and World Report and USA TODAY. The Women's National Book Association has honored him with their Lucille Micheels Pannell Award for his "unique creativity in bringing children and books together."

He has been featured at many prestigious festivals, conferences and institutions, including The National Storytelling Festival, The American Museum of Natural History, The International Storytelling Institute, and The Talking Island Storytelling Festival of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Martin will present a writing workshop for teens at the Vinton County Middle School on Friday, April 18 at 1 p.m. At 3:30 p.m. that day, Martin will give a storytelling session at the library. 

A Spring Literary Arts Festival: Entertaining Dreams is sponsored by the Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library and the Friends of the Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library, Inc., in McArthur, Ohio. The festival opens on Friday, April 18, 2008 and the last event will commence at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, 2008.
