Shakespeare on stage in Vinton County

The Friends' Community Players will present A Midsummer Night's Dream during the fourth annual Spring Literary Arts Festival: Entertaining Dreams in McArthur, Ohio on April 19 and 20.

The play marks the second performance of the community theater group under the direction of Penni AlZayer, whose first SLAF production of I Remember Mama last year was met with acclaim and a full house.

The Players will tackle one of William Shakespeare's more famous plays with a modern twist. AlZayer has adapted and updated the script of A Midsummer Night's Dream in an effort to appeal to a wider audience. While keeping the integrity of the play intact, more modern language mixed in with the dialogue will offer enjoyment with the benefit for those unfamiliar with Shakespearean English.

A Midsummer Night's Dream is set in ancient Greece with a cast of characters that become entwined in the fantastical realm of the fairy kingdom. Comedic twists and turns will lead the audience through an entertaining plot that finally sees the story's main characters happy, if a bit bewildered, in the end.

The Friends' Community Players is the performance arts wing of the Friends of the Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library, Inc. The Players were brought together last year for their first production with a cast made up of mostly Friends' members. This year, however, open auditions were held to select actors.

A Midsummer Night's Dream, chosen in part due to its relation to SLAF's overall theme of Entertaining Dreams, is a source of many well-known quotes still used today such as, "Lord, what fools these mortals be!" and "The course of true love never did run smooth."

A Midsummer Night's Dream will be performed at the Vinton County Middle School on Saturday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 20 at 2:00 p.m. A selected number of dinner tickets are made available to the public for a fee. Please contact the library for dinner ticket information.
