[OPLINLIST] magazine locking covers

Hello all,

Due to some recent issues of magazines going missing, we've been looking
at some possible changes. But before moving ahead, I'm hoping to see how
other libraries handle things.

Currently, Twinsburg allows back issues of periodicals to circulate. The
current issue of each title is kept in a plastic cover that is clearly
marked as not circulating. Unfortunately, those covers use only a thin
wire to keep the magazine in place. It's extremely easy to just slide the
magazine out. The recent issues involve a mix of current issues being
checked out (once out of the protective covers, the magazines carry no
markings that would indicate to Circ staff they're not to be checked out),
and current issues simply being removed from the cases and stolen.

Locking covers, like this from Demco (http://bit.ly/adDHBy), are
available, but are expensive.

Do other libraries keep magazines as non-circulating? If so, do you have
theft issues? Also, does anyone have any experience with these locking
covers?

Thanks in advance,
