On Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at 11:00 am, an Ohio Historic Marker
commemorating Andrew Carnegie / Carnegie Library of Steubenville will be
dedicated at the Main Library of the Public Library of Steubenville and
Jefferson County in Steubenville, Ohio.

In 1852, a young Andrew Carnegie was sent to Steubenville to the telegraph
office when a flood destroyed the wires between Steubenville and Wheeling
(West Virginia) and he was asked to staff the office. He remembered the
City of June 30, 1899 when he provided $ 62,000 to build a new library. The
new Carnegie Library opened March 12, 1902 as one of the first Carnegie
buildings in Ohio.

The new Ohio Historical Marker commemorates the Carnegie Library of
Steubenville on one side, and Andrew Carnegie the Philanthropist, on the
other side.

A reception and Open House will follow the dedication.

Alan Hall, Library Director
