OPLINlisters,

Well, that was interesting. I received three responses to my inquiry...

The first was
Hi David! Great idea! I've no input....just wanted to say Howdy.... Howdy back at ya'!

The second was
I've often thought this would be a good idea, especially since we banned skateboards in the building and the kids have nowhere secure to put them while they browse. I'd love to hear what others are doing! Now that I've got your attention...

The third and most influential as well as thought-provoking was
Hello,
You will probably get lots of responses. There are certainly upsides and downsides.
At my last place of employment we built them into a building project and eventually we took them out. Even though we planned to clear them daily, we had rotting food, bugs and piles of 'stuff' which took lots of staff time. We finally decided that the downsides overshadowed the upsides and that the public would just have to take responsibility for their items.
That was a large facility with a high traffic count, so there were lots of people using the lockers. There also was a large homeless population using the facility.
Personally I wouldn't want lockers again even in my current situation but I understand your reasoning.

Thank you for your responses, esp. #3!

Sincerely,

Subject: Public Lockers

OPLINListers,

I would like to make lockers available to our customers for the purpose of giving them a secure place where they may store their laptops and other items while they go to lunch, visit the restroom, or take some other short term excursion away from the public service area of our department.

So, I am interested in hearing from any public libraries that make lockers available to the public...what did you buy, where are they located in your library, what are your policies and guidelines, and what have you found to be the upside and downside of having public lockers.

If you respond to me off-list, I will be glad to repost a summary of the responses I receive.

Thank you!
