Janelle,
In my past life as a Children's Librarian, we regularly had performers,
local artists, authors donate their time and talent for library
programming. I tried to always give them something to show our
appreciation.  I have given: FOL book bags with a cheap stationary set;
library or dollar store mugs filled with individual tea bags, hot cocoa or
coffee; candy dish with wrapped candy. We knew of one person who loved Mug
Root Beer so we gave him a 2 liter bottle - all of these gifts were
accompanied by a hand written thank you note.

I hope your author visit is fantastic! ~LLW
