[OPLINLIST] Running your searches in reverse

*How do you explain what you do?* At last week’s LinkedIn Lab, we worked
on writing and revising LinkedIn profiles. Your profile is the online
version of your business card and current resume in one. Instead of
trying to fit that onto a card or a single page, you have more room to
share details.

*A good profile has conflicting objectives. On one hand, it includes
enough examples and specifics to represent your work.* Job titles don’t
describe the same position, from one library system or industry to the
next. Your profile can explain what you really do and show examples of
work you’re proud to share.

*On the other hand, a profile needs to be concise enough to make an
impression at a pretty brief glance.* People aren’t likely to read
through every word. They’ll probably scan, instead, so you’ll want to
draw their attention to a couple of the most important ideas. You’re
essentially creating a search query in reverse.

Librarians know how to search. If you’re looking for a research article,
you think about the terms used by people in that profession. You weed
out terms that might return false-positives. If one search doesn’t give
you the results you need, you make some changes and try again. You can
use the same thought process to create a profile, using terms searchers
are likely to use. To test your choices, run searches on terms you might
use and see which give helpful results.

If you’re interested in other ways to improve your online writing, I’m
starting work on a “Writing for the Web” Level-Up Lab. If you’re
interested or would like to suggest a Level-Up Lab topic, be in touch.

Thanks, Nathan Swartzendruber, SWON Technology Educator

    Disney Customer Service Talk

Customer service has a central role at Disney. Lee Cockerell, a former
executive at Disney, has written two books about Disney’s approach to
customer service. Sue Riggs, Library Director at the Galen College of
Nursing in Cincinnati, invites you to hear him speak at the Sharonville
Convention Center on August 6th. This free event runs from 7:30 to 10:00
a.m. Lee’s talk will have a health care angle, but their customer
service tips should be easy to translate to a library setting. To RSVP
or learn more, contact McKenna Byerley at mbyerley at galencollege.edu
<mailto:mbyerley at galencollege.edu> or (502) 410-6287.

    Picture Book Read-In

Five libraries are sending books to this year’s Picture Book Read-In.
Their lists are coming in, and we’re beginning work on the printed
catalog that all participants will receive. With that catalog, you can
easily keep track of the books you’ve read that day and want to remember
later. Not registered yet? Click here: http://tiny.cc/2013pbri
