I also think this is a great group to limit it to (if you choose to limit it) because some of these kids have long-term fines that are actually due to their parents' non-return of items on their cards.

Mike,

Fascinating idea. We never did fine forgiveness. Our administration was always afraid that people would abuse it – i.e. people would just not pay their fines and wait until fine forgiveness rolled around, cutting into the little revenue that we do get from fine collections.

It sounds to me that your idea would best benefit the heavily read teens – smart kids aged 13-17 who will check out a lot of books at one time, actually read them, but can be a tad irresponsible. This is the group that parents beg us could “work off” their fines – and also the group that tends to become non-users when they end up with that big fine that they have to pay for once they turn 18.

I would be interested in learning how well a program like this went.

OPLIN Libraries:

We are looking to have a Read off Your Fines for the month of April in celebration of National Library Week and I’m curious to know from other libraries if they only deduct late fees or also include fees with lost or damaged items.

Historically we have only done late fees. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
