[OPLINLIST] State Library of Ohio awarded $265, 589 grant for Guiding Ohio Online

The State Library of Ohio has been awarded a 2014 Ohio AmeriCorps Formula grant in the amount $265,589 by ServeOhio, Ohio's commission on service and volunteerism. The funding will be used to implement Guiding Ohio Online<http://guidingohioonline.org/>, a program developed by the State Library to support rural public libraries' efforts to teach their patrons to find, understand, and use vital online resources and services. Guiding Ohio Online places AmeriCorps members in rural Ohio libraries to deliver digital literacy training through computer classes, one-on-one computer assistance, outreach, and volunteer recruitment.

"The State Library of Ohio is very pleased to have received a 2014 Ohio AmeriCorps Formula grant to implement Guiding Ohio Online," expressed State Librarian Beverly Cain.  "Project Manager, Mandy Knapp<mailto:aknapp at library.ohio.gov?subject=Guiding%20Ohio%20Online>, has spent the past year working with State Library staff and other partners to build the capacity to implement this program, which will support the critical role of public libraries in helping people connect with e-government resources and services." The State Library received an Ohio AmeriCorps Formula Planning grant<http://library.ohio.gov/Marketing/PR/2013/June#ServeOhio> in 2013 and under the leadership of Ms. Knapp and Assistant Project Manager Evan Struble<mailto:estruble at library.ohio.gov?subject=Guiding%20Ohio%20Online>, developed the Guiding Ohio Online website, program plan, training packages, and promotional materials.  The planning process also included gathering feedback from libraries, identifying rural libraries to participate, and helping recruit AmeriCorps members.

"The Guiding Ohio Online project will be instrumental in assisting public libraries address digital literacy issues in their communities," said Missy Lodge, Associate State Librarian for Library Development.  "State Library staff has documented the need of rural public libraries to help their patrons navigate and understand e-government resources and other online services.  The Ohio AmeriCorps Formula grant will address this need and support public libraries as they work to better the lives of their patrons."

Guiding Ohio Online will work with thirty libraries<http://guidingohioonline.org/about/libraries> to engage 10 full-time AmeriCorps members and 20 part-time AmeriCorps members to serve between October 1, 2014-August 29, 2015.  This program requires one-time match funds in the amount of $2500 for the purpose of training and sustaining each full-time AmeriCorps Member and/or $1250 for the purpose of training and sustaining each part-time AmeriCorps Member from the Host Library.

ServeOhio is purposed specifically to administer grants in Ohio under the federal National & Community Service Trust Act of 1993. Today, the largest of these grants is the AmeriCorps program, where Ohio currently has 21 partner organizations and over 600 AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps programs provide opportunities for Americans to make an intensive commitment to service. The AmeriCorps network of local, state, and national service programs engages more than 70,000 Americans each year.

AmeriCorps members serve through more than 3,000 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based and other community organizations. Through their direct service, AmeriCorps members help meet critical needs in target areas.

The State Library is committed to leading innovation and development efforts for libraries to ensure ongoing relevance to communities across Ohio.  The Guiding Ohio Online project will provide unique opportunities for Ohio public libraries by ensuring a coordinated approach to teaching digital literacy skills while also allowing for AmeriCorps members to adapt trainings to the needs of individual communities.
